Bob Dylan cleared to play in China
Bob Dylan, America’s anti-establishement hero, has been granted permission to make his musical debut in China. It’s the first time he’s gotten approval to perform in Beijing and Shanghai between March 30 and April 12, although this is not the first attempt to do so.
Last year, Dylan canceled two dates in Beijing and Shanghai surrounding conflicting reports of the cause. Some believe there was a financial disagreement with the Taiwanese promoter of the shows. Other reports said the point of contention had to do with Dylan refusing to sign a pledge demanded by the Ministry of Culture to “not hurt the feelings of the Chinese people” during the performance.
Naturally, there are conditions Dylan must follow for this year’s anticipated shows, namely that he is required to stick to the program vetted by the Chinese Ministry of Culture. What that specific program is has not been disclosed.
